Sportsmen Against Hunger

by Dan Hertzog

This past year was a wonderful year for donations to the Kansas City Community Kitchen. The KC-SCI set a goal for 6000 pounds of wild game meat, and with the help from the club membership, we achieved this goal.  We worked with the Missouri Department of Conservation on the cost of processing deer harvested in the urban hunt.  This alone produced 1500 pounds of venison for the needy. Many members contacted me to pickup their donation or dropped it off themselves.  I also received a substantial amount of meat from Hedge Hollow Ranch’s customers.  Many of the hunters from out of state had limited space, so they donated the rest of their harvest to our program.

Due to the fantastic efforts of our club, International presented Bob Bazin with a club achievement award for the 6000 pounds of meat we donated this year.  My hat’s off to everyone, and I challenge you to surpass this number this year!

Some KC-SCI projects include:

  • Hunter Education — Purchased a high tech Laser Shot System that is used to help teach firearm safety and shooting skills in Kansas and Missouri Hunter Education classes. Annually sponsor numerous hunter education classes, which chapter members are instructors.

  • Sensory Safari — Annual outing for the visually impaired to help expand their understanding and knowledge of animals and their environment.

  • Apprentice Hunter Camp — Annual sponsorship of several youths to attend SCI’s unique hunting camp in Texas and Michigan.

  • American Wilderness Leadership School — Annual sponsorship of several teachers to attend the national/international outdoor instructional program that concentrates on natural resource management. The facility located near Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is owned and operated by SCI.

  • Sportsmen Against Hunger — Collect donated wild game and domestic meat for distribution to those in need. To date, these donations have exceeded 41,000 pounds (265,000 meals).

  • Youth Firearms Programs — Sponsor and help establish shooting programs for local 4-H clubs. We sponsor annual shooting events for the public and Boy Scout troops that teach participants firearm safety and shooting skills. Help sponsor youth and handicap deer hunts at Smithville Lake and Youth Turkey Hunts at Burr Oak Woods area.

  • Plus Local PAC fund, Martha Lafite Nature Center, Spofford Children’s Home, Kemper Education Program, Ruffed Grouse & Pronghorn Antelope Restoration and many others.

During the past 28 years KC-SCI has raised thousands of dollars for many local projects and we plan on continuing our Kansas and Missouri community involvement for many more years.
